Vampires, also called the strigoi vii - the living vampire.
What must be addressed is that because we hold Christianity to be true, we must use the Bible to judge what may be possible from the many theories.
Vampires will claim differnt things depending (in my opinion) thier legitimacy. I have seen it said many times that Vampireism is a "dark gift" and there is nothing they can do to stop the urges. I guess this would go along with the "I was born this way" thing goes. Many claim that they suffer from a disease, that makes them crave blood. Others site thier liniage back to Cain. There is far to much to site here but I will give you the best information I have found.
Origin.
The origin of Vampires is differnt depending on who tells it. Please bear in mind that "Blade", "Vlad Dracula", and videogames have nothing to do with this.
1) Affter Cain killed able, God dammnd him to wander and placed a "mark" on him. God also placed a protection on him, so if he was killed, 7 men would die as well. We dont know what this exactaly means, or why God protected him. But according to legend, Cain travled to the land of Nod. Here he either met Lillith, or Satan, and made a pact with them for power, in exchange he would take the blood of others. Remember Lillith is NOT in the Bible. She is a mythical demon (some say djinn), who was supposedly Adams first wife. A Lillith section will be added later.
2) Vampires are the Children of Lillih and Santan. (?) This one does show up, but I dont think it makes much sense.
3) Then of course, if Cain can do it, you can too! Others, mainly men and women of great wickedness, make a pact with the darkness, to return to life, frequentaly because they hate someone or something so much that death could not stop them. Affter rising, they fullfill thier vengence as quickly as possible. It seems many times, that affter they avenge themselves, or whatever made them wish to return, they are saddened by there decison, and wish to see both friends, lovers, and daylight agian. But this saddness drives hatred as well, and they spitefully hurt others to feel better.
Blood Drinking.
Well Folks heres where it gets nasty. If you are easily offended, you probably shouldnt be here anyway.
leviticus17:14 because the life of every creature is its blood. That is why I have said to the Israelites, "You must not eat the blood of any creature, because the life of every creature is its blood; anyone who eats it must be cut off."
Blood is called the essence of life. With out blood Vampires die. I must make some distincitions here.
1) Blood Drinkers.
Not true Vampires. These people engage in what is called "Blood Play" a perverision, where either alone or accompined with sexual acts, they cut themselves and others and tast/drink blood. This is the main type of blood drinkers, perverts who have nothing left to stimulate them. But some drinkers insist they need it. However, you will notice they need sleep, other food, and medical assitance. They treat blood almost as a drug. These I chalk up to be phsyco perverts, who have been corrupted with satanic influence. Frequentaly a blood drinker is a mix of these two. Almost always with this group you will see or hear about the "Vampire the Masqurade" role playing game. Weak people, as with AD&D, can become obsessed and then choose to act out their games, in life.
2) Vampires.
These people need blood to live. They are cursed with "The Thirst", which will make them drink blood. Two groups of vamps fall into here. Immortal Vampires (true), and Mortal Vampires. Immortal need purely blood, and show amazing power, Mortal Vampires may require other things, but they also show great powers, but can and will die, they may have extended life, but not immortal. They draw blood from wrists, neck, and ankles, because of the large blood vessels. So where does it come from?
A) Victims.-- This is the most traditional form, and holds the most truth. Most Vampires draw from the lowest level of society, and frequentaly leave thier victims to look like suicides, or murders, gang violence etc. They prey on the lowest so that no one will miss them, and no one would belive those who know of thier presence. Sometimes, when blood lust takes them they will kill other more noticiable people, which is where 99% of the legends come from. In order to heal or, affter much exaustion, they must take blood as soon as possible.
b) Donors-- Hard to belive, but many "humane" (fake) Vamps claim to have willing donors. These sick people will give thier blood to keep thier patron vampire alive. I find this very unlikely. Only a person of great mental illness would routinly give thier blood. Still it happens, look at all the people involved in blood play! Regardless though, this would be a truely kind and humane thing from a being of pure evil. It is not possible for a true Vampire to allow himself/herself to be at a humans mercy.
3) Powers of Vampires
This is a subject that is debatable, depending on what your belive about Vampires. Let me explain what are the traditional powers, and the most likley.
Long life/Immortality - This is the main appeal of the vampire. Through the blood of others they live for ages. This is happens for either two reasons, 1) They are already dead, so they can not die of normal means. There bodies do not age like ours, and though physical age will show, it takes 100 fold our years. If they are not greatly injured, or have to over use there powers, then they may be able to look young, (or the age of there turning) for ever.
2) If they are non-immortal creatures, then they are still alive and need blood to survive. Still though the dark promise that they represent is blood for power. Do not be decived, blood is never given freely or taken lightly. They would still probably represent an aspect of immortality, though I belive that the blood may have a damaging effect on the body, giving the drinker the sickly, pale, thin appearance that goths try for, so they may live long, not the beautiful evil we think.
Stregnth - Every story about vampires speaks about thier physical stregnth. Despite thier normal or even thin bodies, Vampires posses super human stregnth that allows them to escape almost any capture. If one engages in combat with the darkly attractive, petite female vampire, do not be decived, she posses the power of a man three times her size. It may help to explain thier heaing abilitys, for with stregnth like they have it would be far more difficult to hurt them. But again there power wanes as they tire, and they will need fresh blood soon affter exposing there stregnth.
Senses - Vampires seem to be ultra sensitive to light and sound, even touch. Even though its obvious that they can ignore the discomfort, bright lights burn thier eyes, they sun burn badly, if we consider them the type that can exist in sunlight. Many belive they can detect heartbeats, smell blood, and have night vision. Agian most of this is probable for Immortal Vampires, but much of it is less likly for mortals.
Invincability - I find no proof anywhere that vampires can only be killed from stakes, silver, or any of the other ideas most people have heard of. Silver has been used for ages as a holy metal, so in the use of fighting evil people assumed it would have special properties. I find that though they are very strong, shotguns or anyother normal weapon has the potential to hurt Vampires. The problem is the idea that Vamps regenerate at a very fast rate, and though it requires blood, they can recover from almost any wound. The heart and brain are the best targets, due to the fact that the heart pumps thier stolen blood, and the brain is the center of the body. Vampires dont feel pain the way we do, they almost enjoy it, so losing an arm, or being shot in the stomach would have almost no effect. There unholy power allows there bodies to take far, far more damage than a human.
